International Writers and Translators’ Center of Rhodes


The Center can offer accommodation from two weeks (minimum) to six weeks (maximum) and does not cover travel and everyday expenses of the guests during their stay at the Center. The guests can also use a fully equipped kitchen and a laundry room. It offers the necessary linen (sheets and towels).

Application forms can be provided by the Center via e-mail or by fax or electronically (see the application form on the website of the Center www.writerscenter.gr.


Welcome to the International Writers and Translators’ Center of Rhodes


We hope you will have a pleasant and productive stay at the I.W.T.C.R.
On the next pages you will find some useful information concerning the practical details of your stay.
The I.W.T.C.R. consists of two buildings. The main building which houses our main offices, conference room and library and the second building, which is the hostel you are staying in. This building consists of nine (9) single rooms and one double room, each with private bath shower and toilet. On the ground floor there are three rooms overlooking the sea, a communal kitchen, a dinning room and the laundry service. On the first floor there are four rooms overlooking the sea, three rooms overlooking the Monte Smith hill and the double room overlooking both the sea and the hill. The guests should have their own laptop. In the Center there is free wireless access to Internet and printing.


The administration office is open Monday – Friday 08.00 – 14.00.


Arrival


The guests can travel to Rhodes either by ship or by plane. The port of Rhodes is near to the Center while the Rhodes’ International Airport is approximately 16 km from the center of the town. All day long there are buses from the airport to the town and taxi service is available 24 hours a day.


Keys


You will receive your keys from a member of the staff upon arrival, if you arrive during working hours. Or, you will have been already informed by the Center’s staff how you are going to receive your keys. You are given two keys: one key is for your room and the other one for the outside door, which we ask you to keep locked 24 hours a day. The dining room outside door should also be kept locked 24 hours a day.
Please, do not forget to hand the keys back before your departure.


Library


There is a library in the premises of the Center; it is open during working days and hours. Only the guests of the Center can borrow books. The guests are welcome to make a gift of their own books to our library.
The majority of the books are literary books in various languages, art and history books, humanities books and some literary magazines.



Facilities and services in the town of Rhodes


Libraries

There is a Public Reference Library situated in the Old Town of Rhodes (22410 24448) as well as the Municipal Lending Library (22410 37144), which is in the Municipal Cultural Centre “Rodiaki Epavlis”, only 5 minutes walk from the I.W.T.C.R. There is also the library of the University of the Aegean (22410 99030); you cannot borrow books but you study various scientific books.

Transport

Buses travelling out of the town of Rhodes leave from Averof str., New Market (Nea Agora) area.

City Buses leave from Mandraki Harbor.

Information A-Z

Bank Services Banks are open from Monday to Thursday from 8.00 to 14.30 and on Friday till 14.00. Some banks are also open in the afternoons and on Saturday mornings. Cash dispensers are located throughout the city centre. Major credit cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops. It is advisable to carry an identity card or any form of photo identification. The official currency is Euro.

April – June: temperatures min. +13/ max. +25, humid, windy, showers, sunny
July – September: temperatures min + 25/ max. +38, hot, breezy, humid
October – November: temperatures min + 15/ max. +25, warm, breezy, light rain, humid

Electricity

Electrical current in Greece is 220 V/50 Hz. Round, European-style two-pin plugs are used. Appliances designed to operate on 110/120 Volts need a voltage converter and a plug adapter.


Internet

You have to bring your own laptop and a wireless Internet access is available in the Center. There are also numerous internet cafés in the city centre.


Meals

Breakfast is provided by the Center. There are many lunch restaurants close to the Center.


Passport, Visa and Invitation letter

Participants are advised to make their own arrangements with respect to entering Greece. Individuals requiring an official letter of invitation in order to obtain a visa and authorization to enter the country should contact the Center.


Shopping

Shops are usually open from 9.00-14.30 and from 17.30 – 21.00 during weekdays except Monday, Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. Big stores and super markets are open till late. On Sundays shops are closed.
