The International Writers and Translators’ Center of Rhodes was established in 1996 by virtue of the decision 9184/96 of the Secretary General of the South Aegean Region (Greek Official Gazette 406/13/1997); it is a legal person governed by public law, established by the Municipality of Rhodes, Prefecture of the Dodecanese. By virtue of the decision 9073/08 of the same authority (Greek Official Gazette 1567/B/2008) the aforementioned act of incorporation was amended and the internal rules of operation were laid down; according to this, the following is effective:

Goals of the Center
a)    To organize and operate an International Writers and Translators’ Center of Rhodes in the Municipality of Rhodes as a meeting point of works, knowledge, ideas and views of approved writers, translators and scientists from all over the world.
b)    To provide assistance to the interdisciplinary dialogue between writers, translators and scientists by securing the necessary means and conditions for their work, their unhindered and free expression and promotion of their work. 
c)    To assist in the development of Greek and world literature, arts, sustainability and scientists in general.
d)    To establish cooperation with similar organizations in the world and international associations.
e)    To promote ideas, rights and ideals of the freedom of thought and expression as well as the peaceful coexistence of the people.
f)    To encourage and support new writers, mostly through various educational projects for all ages as well as special educational programmes.
g)    To create and build the necessary logistical infrastructure for the realization of the above goals.
The above goals set by the legal person serve the most crucial cultural need of the local society for the recognition and maintenance of the character and history of Rhodes as a Center of civilization of international range through the ages.

The Center seeks to achieve its goals through:
a)    The construction of facilities and setting up of agencies that will be staffed with qualified personnel.
b)    The compilation and execution of programmes, the organization of conferences, seminars, cultural events and any other similar activities as well as the production of publications and their commercial exploitation by the same legal person in an autonomous manner and according to its interests and goals.
c)    The cooperation with international, public and private bodies and organizations for the study, financing or co-financing and joint execution of the above actions as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience.
d)    The procurement of modern equipment and the creation and reinforcement of the necessary infrastructure.
e)    The support and scientific assistance of UNESCO.
f)    The training and education of the staff.
g)    The offer of grants, awards and accolades as well as scholarships.
h)    The involvement in any form of activity that aims to promote the goals of the legal person.




Operation



The I.W.T.C.R. is administered by the Board of Trustees. It consists of nine (9) members. The members and the substitute members are appointed by the Municipal Council.

In the internal rules of operation, among others, the number and the types of the scientific committees supporting the operation of the Center are provided for.
The committees that have been set up by the Board of Trustees are the following –as well as those that will be set up in the future:
a) International Cultural Committee
b) Committee of Literature
c) Committee of Arts
d) Committee of Sciences
e) Committee of Sustainable Development and Management
The committees are entitled ex officio to discuss subjects of their responsibility and submit proposals to the Board of Trustees as well as to give their opinion on subjects of their responsibility.
The scope of the International Cultural Committee includes every literary activity that is referred to or related with the member countries that are described by the Statute no. 318/2001/26.09.2001 of the Book of Companies of the Court of First Instance of Rhodes. The International Cultural Committee is composed of nine members that elect among them the President, Vice President and Secretary as well as a representative, who can also be the President or the Vice President or the Secretary. Its members are official representatives of literary associations, recognized by the state, of the countries described by the Statute no. 318/2001/26.09.2001 of the Book of Companies of the Court of First Instance of Rhodes and they are appointed by the General Assembly provided for by the same statute.

Eight municipal employees work at the Center as well as some contract staff. 




Financial resources



a) The annual resources from the Municipality of Rhodes.
b) Any financing, subsidies and grants from the Hellenic State, other countries, European Union, private, state and international organizations.
c) Any funds, gifts, bequests.
d) Amounts from services rendered, publications etc.
e) Income from the property that the Center will acquire.
The provisions of the Municipal and Communal Code, as valid, concerning the municipal legal persons governed by public law are applicable to the administration and management of the legal person, its financial resources and to the general financial and administrative operation of the legal person.
